Dr. John P. Painter is the head teacher the Li family martial arts collectively known as Daoqiquan of which Jiulong Baguazhang is a part. The Daoqiquan arts also include Xingyiquan, Taijiquan, ground fighting methods, weapons, qigong health practices, meditation, and philosophy. He began his training during his early teen years under the guidance of Master Li, Long-dao, a professional bodyguard, military trainer and head of the Li family from Sichuan province in China. Before his death, Master Li formally adopted Dr. Painter as his martial arts son and named him heir to the Daoqiquan arts.

He has studied Chinese medicine, massage and acupressure with Dr. Pao, Sun-Lung of Hong Kong and Tibetan yoga and meditation with Lama Trangu Rinpoche as well as attending Texas Tech University majoring in psychology and theater arts. He has also obtained a Ph.D. in naturopathic medicine.

Dr. Painter’s long and colorful history includes work as a bodyguard, escape artist and stuntman in addition to being an author and teaching Daoqiquan arts to thousands of students. He has worked extensively with law enforcement and military personnel and has been named an honorary Texas Ranger. He is listed in the Who’s Who in the Chinese Martial Arts, has been elected to the Texas Martial Arts Hall of Fame and was twice elected to the Inside Kung Fu Magazine Hall of Fame. In keeping with the vow he made to his teacher, Dr. Painter has been passionate about spreading the once secret Daoqiquan methods far and wide for the benefit of all.
